At a fundamental level, what the Small Business Administration (SBA) does is a public/private partnership that provides important resources to small businesses. The SBA is a federal government agency, albeit fairly decentralized. At Code for San Francisco, we’ve partnered very closely with the San Francisco District Office of the Small Business Administration.
The SBA is engaged with business support in three primary areas:
- Diaster Relief
For our project with the SBA, we will focus on loan resources that the SBA has released loan data going back to 1990 via a FOIA request. There are two major challenges we are trying to solve:
- Identifying businesses who have benefited from SBA program
- Helping the SBA prioritize resources. The SBA have limited personnel and limited resources. Ideally we can help them visualize which areas are underutilizing SBA resources to help them prioritize which areas they should focus on.
